Cheap Flights to La Paz

Enjoy the dizzying heights of the world's highest capital; a bustling city built into a canyon with stunning views of the snow-capped Illimani Mountain. La Paz is a city of contrast, where tradition and modernity co-exist happily and where elegance and urban life also sit side by side. What the Bolivian capital is about for some, however, is eccentricity as this is a city that truly offers visitors an other-wordly experience, whether its travelling from mountain to mountain via cable car, watching traditionally dressed women wrestle, cycling the so-called Death Road or shopping at the Witches Market, every experience you have here is unlike the last. It's also a city that constantly reinvents itself, with flash restaurants, a buzzing nightlife, interesting museums and a growing artists scene. Indigenous and Latin culture come together to celebrate a series of religious and traditional festivals which often see music and dancing played out on the streets.

Things to do

La Paz, the capital of Bolivia, is a city with experiences like none other -- from adrenaline-inducing activities to weird and wonderful shopping and jaw-dropping transport options. This is a city for the brave and adventurous.

  • Shop at local markets
Markets are the lifeblood of the city and wandering around these Bolivian stalls you'll see unlikely retail goods aplenty. One such destination is the Witches Market where you may buy cures and charms such as dried llama foetuses as well as traditional arts and crafts including knitted alpaca items, jewellery and wood carvings. La Paz markets are also the place to find your cheapest eats; try some local street food such as Salteñas and tucumanas (meat filled pastries).

  • Travel by cable car
No city in the world does cable cars like La Paz. Not just one but three cable car lines are in operation. These provide an amazing view over this sprawling mountainside city, whilst also being a cheap and easy way to get from A to B.

  • Unique Experiences
One thing this city does well is offer unique experiences. These include a cycle trip down Death Road (officially Yungas Road): a 69-kilometre winding mountain path that is hugely popular with adrenaline-seeking tourists and is dubbed "The world's most dangerous road". If that's not enough, then every Sunday night traditionally dressed women compete in Cholita Wrestling, tickets and transport for which can be easily purchased in the city.

Calendar of Events

As Bolivia's cultural capital, La Paz plays host to a number of arts and music festivals as well as traditional and religious celebrations.

  • Achocalla Festival. In January, this most traditional of Almayran festivals celebrates harvest time with music, dancing and street parades.
  • La Fiesta del Gran Poder. In May/June, this religious festival celebrates El Señor del Gran Poder (Jesus) but does so through both Almayra and Catholic folklore and dancing. The event is a great opportunity to see how indigenous culture and imported Catholicism have evolved together in Bolivia.
  • Independence Day. On 6th August 1825, Bolivia got independence from Spanish rule. The day is widely celebrated nationwide.
